Overview
Singer Roxie Hart dreams of being a star. But when she shoots her unfaithful lover, she ends up in prison rather than the limelight. There she meets Velma Kelly, the celebrated idol of Chicago’s music scene, who is also accused of murder. With the help of the cunning lawyer Billy Flynn, Velma knows how to use her stay in prison to promote her career, and her young competitor Roxie also sees an opportunity. After all, truth or morality mean nothing if you want to be famous – it’s all about who tells the most exciting story!
Chicago, created by the acclaimed duo John Kander and Fred Ebb who also wrote the hit musical Cabaret, is one of the most successful Broadway productions of all times. This musical about two women who will literally step over dead bodies to get what they want has captivated more than 31 million spectators world-wide to date. Songs like “All that Jazz”, “Mister Cellophane” or “Cell Block Tango” have become jazz classics far beyond the musical.
Chicago marks the return of director Felix Seiler to the State Opera of Hanover. His poetical and fairy-tale-like production of the operetta Die Zirkusprinzessin enchanted the audience in 2022. This new production of Chicago in Hanover will have everything you can expect from a major American musical: a spectacular stage show, captivating dance numbers, strong characters and a thrilling story that takes a critical look at society at the same time. Passion, sex, intrigue, murder and “all that jazz”!
