Stimmen: Voice Stories

Concert and Talk: A Member of the Company meets a Guest from the independent Scene

Dates and tickets

Unfortunately there are currently no dates planned for this production.

Voice Stories have found a new home at Kestner Gesellschaft: Inside the current exhibitions of contemporary artists, a member of our company will encounter a guest from the independent scene. Together, they will explore the simple, yet sweeping question: Why do people sing? They talk about their origins, not only in terms of music. And to bring these stories to life, they will perform the songs that have shaped them.

In March, mezzo-soprano Beatriz Miranda from the State Opera’s company will meet the singer, composer and activist Ganna Gryniva who mixes jazz and folklore to create something entirely new and who has recently begun to combine her unique solo voice with loops and electronica. At the Kestner Gesellschaft, both singers will tell their Voice Stories, which brought them to Germany from Brazil and Ukraine respectively, and they will share how they discovered their voices as an immediate medium of expression – and the fragile relationship between music and politics, private calling and social role.

The third partner to join their conversation will be tapestries and textile sculptures by Diedrick Brackens (*1989 in Mexia, Texas) whose works are presented at the Kestner Gesellschaft as his first solo exhibition at a European institution. His works, which span an arc between allegory and autobiography, make a very unique contribution to the narrative: Visual art and music embrace and intertwine. The exhibition’s motto “Everything I have ever touched” could be expanded for the context of Voice Stories: “Everything that has ever touched me”.

This event will be held in English and German.
